A new study has found that drinking dairy milk could lead to a higher risk of breast cancer. The study found a high association and the connection appears even in women that drink small amounts of dairy milk.
Dr. Gary E Fraser shared, “Consuming as little as 1/4 to 1/3 cup of dairy milk per day was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer of 30%. By drinking up to one cup per day, the associated risk went up to 50%. And for those drinking two to three cups per day, the risk increased further to 70% to 80%.”
The study followed over 50,000 women for 8 years and found that the higher the dairy milk intake, the higher the risk of breast cancer. The women were asked about demographics, family history, alcohol use, and other medical histories.
The study did not look at cheese or yogurt. Fraser said, ” However, dairy foods, especially milk, were associated with increased risk, and the data predicted a marked reduction in risk associated with substituting soymilk for dairy milk. This raises the possibility that dairy-alternate milks may be an optimal choice.” No association was found between soy milk and breast cancer.
