You’ve most likely heard of omega-3 fatty acids, but did you know there are eleven different types of omega-3 fatty acids? Luckily for us, there are only three that are essential to be aware of: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) — most commonly found in plant-based foods — eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) — both of which are found primarily in fatty fish, fish oils, and even algae. With that said, let’s narrow it down further! While ALA is important, it’s converted into EPA and DHA by the body and resides in lots of plant-based staples such as kale, spinach, walnuts, and chia seed.
Both EPA and DHA are essential, yet for the purposes of this article let’s focus on docosahexaenoic acid.
DHA is an essential form of omega-3 fatty acid that is necessary for a healthy, functioning body. With that said, DHA is specifically important for the health of your brain and eyes. Even though DHA is found readily in fish-based foods — such as eggs and fatty fish — those that practice a strict plant-based diet can consume DHA through vegan-safe supplements.

While the main ingredient is clearly vegan (algae), I was concerned that the glycerin was not. I emailed the company and they promptly replied that the glycerin or glycerol is, in fact, vegan. They even sent me a document showing confirmation that it is from a vegetarian source. So far, I really like these capsules, and after the response, I got from the company due to my concerns, I will definitely be buying more.”

10. Nested Naturals Vegan Omega 3 Algal DHA & EPA Supplements
Nested Naturals Vegan Omega 3 Algal DHA & EPA Supplements
Looking to get that vegan natural boost of health for your cardiovascular system, brain, and eyes? This supplement may be the ticket for you! Nested Naturals is a socially conscious company that prides itself on their ethically produced ingredients. Jeffrey L. de Vreis says “According to Dr Michael Greger at Nutritionfacts, our ability to convert short-chain omega-3’s, like those found in flax and hemp seeds, into the long-chain DHA and EPA varieties declines as we age. Yet those long-chain omega-3’s are vital for brain health, especially as we get older. So I was looking for a good algae-based vegan source providing at least 250mg of DHA/EPA long-chain omega-3’s and found Nested Natural’s product and tried it. The capsules have a very mild “marine” smell to them (which might be good or bad thing depending on your point of view), but I have had zero issues with aftertaste or breath smell after taking the capsules. Overall, I’m very satisfied with this product, and plan on continuing to use it.”
